Background
I am Ren Aoki, and I write the Needles guides on this site. I have spent twelve years sourcing Japanese menswear, most of it buying for boutiques that focus on Tokyo labels. That work meant seasonal trips to Tokyo, long afternoons in fitting rooms, and a lot of conversations with customers who wanted to know one thing: will this fit me?
Needles has been part of that work for as long as I have done it. I have ordered it, unpacked it, steamed it, pinned it and fitted it on clients of every build, from slim runners to broad-shouldered lifters. These days I am based in Los Angeles, where I still fit clients and write about the pieces I know best.
Readers sometimes arrive here after seeing the name Ren Aoki on Needles guides and wondering who is behind them. The short answer: a buyer who cares more about how a hem falls than about hype. How I Evaluate a Needles Piece
I do not write about a garment from a photo. My process is slow on purpose.
- I wear it for weeks. A track pant shows its character over time: how the knee holds its shape, whether the hem stacks the same way on the tenth wear as the first, how the fabric behaves on a long flight.
- I wash it. Cold wash, air dry, then I look again at the side tape, the papillon embroidery and the drape.
- I compare sizes. Wherever I can, I try the same style one size apart, because Japanese sizing runs roughly one size smaller than US sizing and the right answer depends on the fit.
- I fit it on other people. My own build is one data point. Clients tell me far more about how an H.D. or Narrow pant behaves on different bodies.

- No invented measurements. Garment measurements vary by season and fabric, so I explain sizing by fit and body type instead of quoting numbers I cannot stand behind.
- Prices are as listed. Every price I mention is the price shown on the store at the time of the last update.
- Disclosure. This store sells the pieces I discuss. I write to help you choose well, including telling you when a fit or a policy may not suit you.
